General Questions
Who creates Naruto?
The original manga version of Naruto is drawn and written by Kishimoto Masashi, and runs in the manga magazine Weekly Shounen Jump. The anime adaptation of Naruto is produced by Studio Pierrot, and airs every Wednesday on TV Tokyo.
Who owns Naruto? Is Naruto licensed?
Naruto is owned by author Kishimoto Masashi, manga publisher Shueisha, anime sponsor and television channel TV Tokyo, anime artists Studio Pierrot, anime producer/distributor Aniplex, and possibly other companies. The Naruto manga and anime are licensed in North America by VIZ Media.
Is the anime/manga over?
Both the anime and manga are still running.
How far ahead is the manga from the anime?
From 2005 to 2007 the anime ran a number of "filler" episodes which did not correspond to the manga storyline; episode 135, corresponding roughly to manga chapter 238, marked the last episode based on Part 1 of the Naruto manga, and the new Naruto season, Naruto Shippuuden, picked up starting from chapter 245 in its episode 1. As of manga chapter 362, there is a gap of several story arcs, equivalent to 80 ~ 100 manga chapters, between the manga and the anime.
When will the anime fillers be over?
The fillers have ended as of February 2007. A new manga-based Naruto series called Naruto Shippuuden is currently on air in Japan.
What days/times do the manga chapters / anime episodes come out?
New raw manga chapters are usually available every Thursday or Friday, with translations and scanlations following shortly thereafter, sometimes within hours of the raw release. Raw anime episodes are available on Thursday as well, and subtitled versions are generally up by Friday or Saturday.
The raw / scanlation / fansub is late this week!
We know. Chances are someone has already posted about it. Look for their post instead of making duplicates.
There was no raw this week! Is the series ending?
No. Sometimes -- often on Japanese holidays -- Shounen Jump magazine takes a week's break, meaning no new Naruto. Sometimes other special programs are shown in the anime's timeslot such as one of the Naruto movies. So occasionally there are weeks when no new stuff shows up.
What does "dattebayo" mean?
'Dattebayo', a set of expressions with which Naruto frequently ends his sentences, is a very Japanese turn of phrase which is hard to properly explain in English. It breaks up into three sections, like so: "da tteba yo".
'Da' is the casual form of 'desu', a copula often used to end statements.
'tteba' ultimately comes from the expression 'to iu', which means 'to say [something]' and is used to give direct quotes. (Example: "Yumi wa yakisoba wo tabetai to itta." = 'Yumi said that she wanted to eat yakisoba.') However, the 'tteba' expression generally implies a feeling of impatience or exasperation on the part of the speaker. In Naruto's case, it would imply his impatience to make sure people are listening to him, consistent with his attention-seeking nature. ("I'm saying that I wanna eat ramen!")
'yo' is used to add extra emphasis and emotion.
So in summary, 'dattebayo' is a very emphatic, attention-seeking, and informal turn of phrase, appropriate for a brash young boy like Naruto. :)
What do the characters' names mean?

Most characters are included, but some have undoubtedly slipped our translator's mind; feel free to request a character in the comments (however, be advised that not every character has a special name meaning -- in particular, several Akatsuki members have been left off intentionally).

Can I / How do I use tags?

Can I be a maintainer / moderator?
Nah, we have it covered, but thanks.
Can I affiliate my community with
Sure, if your community meets our requirements for affiliation. Be forewarned: they're pretty tough. Don't get upset if we tell you no.
What does getting a warning mean?
If you get a warning, it means you broke the rules in some way. A warning is a red flag, and if you receive one the mods will be keeping an eye on you to make sure you're behaving. If you already have a warning and break the rules again, more severe action may be taken.
A mod just scolded me / told me to edit my post! Does this mean I have a warning?
Unless the mod specifically says "This is an official warning", you do not have a warning.
How do I keep from getting warnings, temp-bans, or a ban?
Follow the rules and play nice. Don't say things to hurt people or piss people off. Don't troll. Don't insult people. Don't insult people's fanworks when giving criticism. Contact the maintainers instead of engaging in / continuing / provoking a flame war (because we'll punish all parties who do wrong, not just the one who started it).
I was temp-banned; Why?
Normally we will explain this to you at the time of your temp-ban, along with how long the temp-ban will last. You probably either received three warnings from us or we temp-banned you for a severe offense, or to let you cool down before returning to the community after something heated happened.
I was banned; Why?
You probably did something with the obvious intent of hurting people, or you trolled, or you just pose too many ongoing problems to bother dealing with anymore. We don't perma-ban users very easily, and reserve it for only heinous crimes or unmanageable people, so you probably gave the community and/or the maintainers a lot of grief.
Will I be unbanned?
If you were temp-banned, you will be unbanned once the temp-ban period expires. If you were permabanned, no. Not ever. Period. Don't even bother asking.
Will you unban me anyway?
Sorry, who are you again?
You guys are so evil! The mods are all corrupt bastards! / The mods don't do enough! /
Here's the thing: We can't please all of the people all of the time. If we enforce the rules with lightning-fast speed and without mercy, then we're evil and overbearing and corrupt and unjust and against whatever you stand for; if we give leniency or don't catch a problem, then we're inconsistent and modding on a whim and not doing our job. We just can't win. If you want to help us do better, though: make sure to read the rules and follow them so that we don't have anything to enforce on you, and contact us when you spot a problem, because the community is huge and it's very possible (and likely) that we missed something. Our contact information is on the userinfo page for a reason -- we hope you'll use it!
