Plot Questions

Items that look like this: [whitespace between brackets] contain spoilers for recent manga chapters; highlight them to view. Tread carefully.

Is Yondaime Naruto's father?
We don't know. There are a few implications that he might be, but it is far from certain at this point in time.

What's Yondaime's real name?
No one knows. Fans have come up with the following names for Yondaime, all of which are FALSE:
Uzumaki Arashi
Uzumaki Kayaku
Kazuma Arashi
Uzumaki Taiyou
Shimenawa

Rumors have claimed that Yondaime's name is visible on the frog summoning scroll Jiraiya gives Naruto to sign, but this is also completely FALSE. The writing in the space where Yondaime's name would be is 100% illegible in both manga and anime; this has been confirmed many times by many different Japanese-speaking fans.

Who is the leader of Akatsuki?
No one knows at this point in time.

Will there be any female Akatsuki members?
At one point fans believed Kishimoto to have said as much in an interview, but this turned out to be a mistranslation. What Kishimoto actually said was that in the future there would appear more Akatsuki members and a strong kunoichi. We have seen the promised Akatsuki members -- [Hidan] and [Kakuzu] and the as-yet-unnamed member in the Akatsuki group picture -- and it is possible, though not immediately clear thus far, that the strong kunoichi referred to was meant to be [Yugito, the Nibi Jinchuuriki. However, as she has made only a very short appearance thus far and was very likely killed, it is not clear whether she was meant to take the role of the promised 'strong kunoichi' character.]

Is [Tobi] really Obito?
[We don't know. Many fans think he is, but this is only speculation for now.]

What happened to Rin?
It's unknown. However, it's very likely she died at some point, since Kakashi tells Sasuke that all his loved ones are dead.

Why did Itachi really kill the Uchiha clan?
His stated motivation was that he wanted to test his body's limits -- to see how much he could do and whether he could get away with it. Whether there was really more to the massacre than that, at present, remains to be seen.

What was in the secret Uchiha scroll Sasuke read?
We don't know.

How is it possible for Kakashi to have the [Mangekyou]?
[It's not clear at this point. Some fans believe that since Itachi stated to Sasuke that one has to kill one's best friend in order to gain Mangekyou, Kakashi's grief and guilt over Obito's death was enough to give him access to the Mangekyou's power. This is only one of several competing theories.]

Why did Orochimaru leave Konoha?
We are presented with two different motivations for this action. Orochimaru wanted to become Hokage, and Sandaime gave the post to Yondaime instead, which may have helped spur the decision -- however, we are shown that the immediate catalyst for Orochimaru's flight from the village was the discovery of his human experimentation by Sandaime.

How is Asuma related to Sandaime and Konohamaru?
[Sandaime is Asuma's father. As Konohamaru is Sandaime's grandson, this also makes Konohamaru and Asuma related in some way. It has not been explicitly stated either way, but during their scant screen time together, Konohamaru and Asuma do not interact at all, so it seems unlikely they are father and son; the most likely possibility is that Asuma is Konohamaru's uncle.]

Is Danzou related to [Tenzou/Yamato]?
[It seems unlikely, since Tenzou is known to be a genetically-engineered clone, but we have not explicitly been told either way.]

What do the characters' names mean?

(Note: This page contains some Japanese text; if it will not display or comes out as gibberish on your system, check this page to learn how to make it display properly.)

Team Seven

春野サクラ Haruno Sakura: 'Haruno' means 'of spring'. 'Sakura' means 'cherry blossom'. Hence Sakura's name means, literally, 'cherry blossom of spring'.

はたけカカシ Hatake Kakashi: 'Hatake' is a field -- specifically a regular farm field rather than a rice field. 'Kakashi' is a scarecrow.

うちはサスケ Uchiha Sasuke: 'Uchiha' is similar in pronunciation to the word 'uchiwa', which is a round paddle-shaped fan, the same one seen in the Uchiha family emblem. (In the Japanese language, there are some instances where a syllable written as 'ha' is pronounced 'wa', hence the pun is immediately obvious to Japanese readers.) 'Sasuke' is a common boy's name as well as being the personal name of Sarutobi Sasuke, a famous fictional ninja in Japanese history.

うずまきナルト Uzumaki Naruto: 'Uzumaki' is a whirlpool, a coil, or a spiral shape. 'Naruto' refers to two things -- a type of kamaboko (steamed fish-paste cake) used as a topping on ramen, and the Naruto whirlpool, a famous Japanese landmark. Slices of naruto in ramen traditionally have a pink swirl in the middle, so this name is a pun on two different levels.

Team Eight

油女シノ Aburame Shino:　'Aburame' means 'oil woman'. If 'Shino' has a specific intended meaning, it's unclear.

日向ヒナタ Hyuuga Hinata: Both Hinata's surname and personal name mean the same thing: 'a sunny place' or 'in the sun'.

犬塚キバ Inuzuka Kiba: 'Inuzuka' means 'dog hill'. 'Kiba' means 'fang'.

夕日紅 Yuuhi Kurenai: Kurenai's name means 'crimson sunset'. :) 'Yuuhi' is 'setting sun' and 'kurenai' is 'crimson'.

Team Ten

秋道チョウジ Akimichi Chouji: 'Akimichi' means 'autumn road' or 'autumn path'. 'Chouji' contains the 'chou' of 'chouchou', which means 'butterfly'.

奈良シカマル Nara Shikamaru: 'Nara' is the name of a famous ancient city in Japan; one of the things Nara is known for is its deer. 'Shikamaru' contains 'shika', which means 'deer'. '-maru' is a common traditional ending for boy's names.

猿飛アスマ Sarutobi Asuma: 'Sarutobi' means 'flying monkey', and also evokes the name Sarutobi Sasuke, a famous fictional ninja. 'Asuma' is a normal name and does not appear to have any special meaning.

山中いの Yamanaka Ino: 'Yamanaka' means 'inside the mountain'. 'Ino' is from 'inoshishi', a boar. (Hence why Sakura taunts Ino with the name 'Ino-buta', meaning 'Ino-pig'.)

Team Gai

日向ネジ Hyuuga Neji: 'Hyuuga' means 'a sunny place' or 'in the sun'. 'Neji' means 'a screw' (as in the metal kind), 'helix', or 'spiral'.

マイト・ガイ Maito Gai: According to Kishimoto-sensei, this name was chosen because he is indeed a "Mighty Guy".

ロック・リー Rock Lee: Thought to be a pun on the name of famous martial artist Bruce Lee.

テンテン Tenten: The repetitive nature of Tenten's name, coupled with her hair and clothing style, seem to suggest that she is supposed to be Chinese.

Sand Siblings

我愛羅 Gaara: As detailed in the series, Gaara's name means 'a demon who loves only himself'. Read literally, the three characters mean 'self (我 ga) love (愛 a) demon (羅 ra)'. The 'ra' in Gaara's name is short for 'Ashura', a specific kind of demon.

カンクロウ Kankurou: Also the name of a line of famous kabuki actors.

テマリ Temari: These are traditional Japanese cloth balls, once made as children's toys and now regarded as an art form. Read more here.

Sannin

地来也 Jiraiya: Jiraiya's name and that of the other two Sannin are lifted from a Japanese serial novel and kabuki play of the mid to late 1800s titled "Jiraiya Gouketsu Monogatari" (The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya). Kishimoto-sensei writes his Jiraiya's name with different kanji than the Jiraiya of the 1800s; the characters of our Jiraiya's name can be read as 'to come and be on the earth'.

大蛇丸 Orochimaru: 'Orochi' means a giant snake. '-maru' is a common traditional ending for boy's names. Orochimaru was, unsurprisingly, the traitorous ally-turned-villain of Jiraiya Gouketsu Monogatari.

綱手 Tsunade: 'tsunade' is mooring rope. The Jiraiya Gouketsu Monogatari character was the female lead and Jiraiya's love interest.

Akatsuki

（赤砂の）サソリ (Akasuna no) Sasori: 'Sasori' means 'scorpion'. 'Akasuna no Sasori', therefore, is 'Scorpion of the Red Sand'.

飛段 Hidan: 'Hi' is an abbreviation of 飛車 'hisha', the name of the rook piece in shogi.

干柿鬼鮫 Hoshigaki Kisame: 'Hoshigaki' are dried persimmons. 'Kisame' means 'demon shark'.

角都 Kakuzu: 'Kaku' is an abbreviation of 角行 'kakugyou', the name of the bishop piece in shogi.

うちはイタチ Uchiha Itachi: 'Uchiha' is similar in pronunciation to the word 'uchiwa', which is a round paddle-shaped fan, the same one seen in the Uchiha family emblem. (In the Japanese language, there are some instances where a syllable written as 'ha' is pronounced 'wa', hence the pun is immediately obvious to Japanese readers.) 'Itachi' means 'weasel'.

Kirigakure

白 Haku: The kanji for Haku's name means 'white'.

桃地再不斬 Momochi Zabuza: 'Momochi' means 'ground where peaches grow' (literally 'peach [momo] ground [chi]'). The characters in 'Zabuza' can be read as 'not kill again' or 'not kill a second time'.

Konohagakure

月光ハヤテ Gekkou Hayate: 'Gekkou' means 'moonlight'. Hayate is a normal Japanese name.

はがねコテツ Hagane Kotetsu: 'Hagane' means 'steel'. 'Kotetsu' contains 'tetsu', which means 'iron'.

はたけサクモ Hatake Sakumo: 'Hatake' is a field -- specifically a regular farm field rather than a rice field. 'Sakumo' probably comes from the word 'sakumotsu' (作物), meaning produce or crops.

神月イズモ Kamizuki Izumo: 'Kamizuki' means 'divine moon' or 'god moon'. 'Izumo' may refer to Izumo Taisha, a famous Shinto shrine.

みたらしアンコ Mitarashi Anko: 'Mitarashi' is the name of a honey-like syrup made from soy sauce which is sometimes used to flavor dango (Anko's favorite food). 'Anko' is a sweet red bean paste, also used to flavor dango.

並足ライドウ Namiashi Raidou: 'Namiashi' means 'a walking pace' or 'slow march'. 'Raidou' can mean 'following blindly'.

不知火ゲンマ Shiranui Genma: 'Shiranui' means 'phosphorescent light' or 'mysterious lights on the sea'. Genma is a regular Japanese name and appears to have no special meaning.

うみのイルカ Umino Iruka: 'Umino' means 'of the sea'. 'Iruka' means 'dolphin'.

Otogakure

赤胴ヨロイ Akadou Yoroi: 'Yoroi' means armor.

ドス・キヌタ Dosu Kinuta, キン・ツチ Kin Tsuchi, ザク・アブミ Zaku Abumi: Appropriately for Sound ninja, all three of these characters are named using Japanese onomatopoeia.

次郎坊 Jiroubou: This name means 'next son'.

鬼童丸 Kidoumaru: 'Kidou' means 'demon child'. '-maru' is a common traditional ending for boy's names.

君麻呂 Kimimaro: This name is of a classical style that evokes images of the ancient Japanese nobility.

左近 Sakon means 'close to the left', while 右近 Ukon means 'close to the right'.

多由也 Tayuya: The -ya ending makes this name sound boyish. The kanji of 'tayu' can mean 'many reasons' or 'many causes'.

剣ミスミ Tsurugi Misumi: 'Tsurugi' means a sword.

薬師カブト Yakushi Kabuto: 'Yakushi' means 'a master/teacher of medicine', and may evoke the image of Buddha as healer of all ills. 'Kabuto' means a helmet or headpiece.

The anime adaptation of Naruto is produced by Studio Pierrot, and airs every Wednesday on TV Tokyo.

Who owns Naruto? Is Naruto licensed?
Naruto is owned by author Kishimoto Masashi, manga publisher Shueisha, anime sponsor and television channel TV Tokyo, anime artists Studio Pierrot, anime producer/distributor Aniplex, and possibly other companies. The Naruto manga and anime are licensed in North America by VIZ Media.

Is the anime/manga over?
Both the anime and manga are still running.

How far ahead is the manga from the anime?
From 2005 to 2007 the anime ran a number of "filler" episodes which did not correspond to the manga storyline; episode 135, corresponding roughly to manga chapter 238, marked the last episode based on Part 1 of the Naruto manga, and the new Naruto season, Naruto Shippuuden, picked up starting from chapter 245 in its episode 1. As of manga chapter 362, there is a gap of several story arcs, equivalent to 80 ~ 100 manga chapters, between the manga and the anime.

When will the anime fillers be over?
The fillers have ended as of February 2007. A new manga-based Naruto series called Naruto Shippuuden is currently on air in Japan.

What days/times do the manga chapters / anime episodes come out?
New raw manga chapters are usually available every Thursday or Friday, with translations and scanlations following shortly thereafter, sometimes within hours of the raw release. Raw anime episodes are available on Thursday as well, and subtitled versions are generally up by Friday or Saturday.

The raw / scanlation / fansub is late this week!
We know. Chances are someone has already posted about it. Look for their post instead of making duplicates.

There was no raw this week! Is the series ending?
No. Sometimes -- often on Japanese holidays -- Shounen Jump magazine takes a week's break, meaning no new Naruto. Sometimes other special programs are shown in the anime's timeslot such as one of the Naruto movies. So occasionally there are weeks when no new stuff shows up.

What does "dattebayo" mean?
'Dattebayo', a set of expressions with which Naruto frequently ends his sentences, is a very Japanese turn of phrase which is hard to properly explain in English. It breaks up into three sections, like so: "da tteba yo".
'Da' is the casual form of 'desu', a copula often used to end statements.
'tteba' ultimately comes from the expression 'to iu', which means 'to say [something]' and is used to give direct quotes. (Example: "Yumi wa yakisoba wo tabetai to itta." = 'Yumi said that she wanted to eat yakisoba.') However, the 'tteba' expression generally implies a feeling of impatience or exasperation on the part of the speaker. In Naruto's case, it would imply his impatience to make sure people are listening to him, consistent with his attention-seeking nature. ("I'm saying that I wanna eat ramen!")
'yo' is used to add extra emphasis and emotion.
So in summary, 'dattebayo' is a very emphatic, attention-seeking, and informal turn of phrase, appropriate for a brash young boy like Naruto. :)

What do the characters' names mean?
Click here for a non-exhaustive list. Most characters are included, but some have undoubtedly slipped our translator's mind; feel free to request a character in the comments (however, be advised that not every character has a special name meaning -- in particular, several Akatsuki members have been left off intentionally).

Where do I find Naruto manga/anime/other stuff online?
Click here for a list of places to buy or download the Naruto anime, manga, music, merch, and more. Make sure to follow all guidelines for posting your advertisement as outlined in the rules section of the userinfo.

What is Friends-locking/Friends-only/Flock and how do I do it?
Friends lock, often abbreviated as "flock", is a Livejournal function that permits only people on your friends list to read a given post. When you friends lock a post to a community like chuunin, it means that only registered and logged-in chuunin members can read the post you made. You must friends lock your posts when posting files such as MP3s, scanlations, and anime episodes.

How to friends lock a Livejournal entry

If you are making a new post:
1. Go to the Update Journal page.
2. Look under the Options header for a section labeled Security. Click the drop-down arrow.
3. Choose the "Friends" option. Write your post and submit. (Don't forget to set the "Post to" drop-down option to "chuunin" if you're posting to the community!)
4. Your journal entry will now be posted friends-locked.

If you are editing a previously-created post:
1. Go to the comm's front page and find your post.
2. Click on the grey pencil icon underneath your entry to be taken to the Edit Journal Page.
3. Look under the Options header for a section labeled Security. Click the drop-down arrow.
4. Choose the "Friends" option and submit.
5. Your journal entry is now friends-locked.

Can I / How do I use tags?
Tag usage on chuunin is limited to a select group of individuals, but anyone may apply for tag control. Information on using tags will be available in the upcoming tag control application post.

Can I be a maintainer / moderator?
Nah, we have it covered, but thanks.

Can I affiliate my community with chuunin?
Sure, if your community meets our requirements for affiliation. Be forewarned: they're pretty tough. Don't get upset if we tell you no.

What does getting a warning mean?
If you get a warning, it means you broke the rules in some way. A warning is a red flag, and if you receive one the mods will be keeping an eye on you to make sure you're behaving. If you already have a warning and break the rules again, more severe action may be taken. chuunin has a three-strike system: after three warnings, no matter how small the offenses, a temp-ban will ensue. A permanent ban may be given after just one or zero previous warnings, if the offense is great enough. Decisions like this are not made by any single person; they are discussed among the maintainers and agreed upon.

A mod just scolded me / told me to edit my post! Does this mean I have a warning?
Unless the mod specifically says "This is an official warning", you do not have a warning.

How do I keep from getting warnings, temp-bans, or a ban?
Follow the rules and play nice. Don't say things to hurt people or piss people off. Don't troll. Don't insult people. Don't insult people's fanworks when giving criticism. Contact the maintainers instead of engaging in / continuing / provoking a flame war (because we'll punish all parties who do wrong, not just the one who started it).

I was temp-banned; Why?
Normally we will explain this to you at the time of your temp-ban, along with how long the temp-ban will last. You probably either received three warnings from us or we temp-banned you for a severe offense, or to let you cool down before returning to the community after something heated happened.

I was banned; Why?
You probably did something with the obvious intent of hurting people, or you trolled, or you just pose too many ongoing problems to bother dealing with anymore. We don't perma-ban users very easily, and reserve it for only heinous crimes or unmanageable people, so you probably gave the community and/or the maintainers a lot of grief.

Will I be unbanned?
If you were temp-banned, you will be unbanned once the temp-ban period expires. If you were permabanned, no. Not ever. Period. Don't even bother asking.

Will you unban me anyway?
Sorry, who are you again?

You guys are so evil! The mods are all corrupt bastards! / The mods don't do enough! / chuunin has no mods who actually do anything!
Here's the thing: We can't please all of the people all of the time. If we enforce the rules with lightning-fast speed and without mercy, then we're evil and overbearing and corrupt and unjust and against whatever you stand for; if we give leniency or don't catch a problem, then we're inconsistent and modding on a whim and not doing our job. We just can't win. If you want to help us do better, though: make sure to read the rules and follow them so that we don't have anything to enforce on you, and contact us when you spot a problem, because the community is huge and it's very possible (and likely) that we missed something. Our contact information is on the userinfo page for a reason -- we hope you'll use it!
